Church of the Santissima Annunziata
The Church of the Santissima Annunziata, located in the park of the same name, was a catholic place of worship of Ascoli Piceno.
It stands above centuries-old Annunziata Grottos, on the Annunziata hill, from which it is possible to enjoy stunning views over the town.
Originally serving as a hospital, it is part of a vast complex erected in the Middle Ages on the remains of ancient Roman buildings. Local historian Sebastiano Andreantonelli described the complex as the “seventh convent of Ascoli”, whose management was entrusted first to the Augustinian nuns and then to the Order of the Friars Minor.
The entire building is the result of the extension of an older structure “from XIII century”, used as a hospital until 1250 when Friar Pietro da Verona (later Saint Peter Martyr) entrusted it to the Augustinian nuns. The older of the two cloisters, together with the little church that flanks the portico, were built specifically for them.
In 1444, its custody was given to the nuns of the Rule of Saint Monica, while from 1481-1482 to 1861 the convent and the church were managed by the local Friars Minor Observants.
